Voice Actors Weigh a New TV Animation Deal
SAG-AFTRA’s proposed animation agreements bring wage increases, streaming residual changes and more detailed digital-replica protections to a member vote due October 29.
Voice actors have a new television-animation agreement to examine, with decisions that reach beyond the next recording session. SAG-AFTRA announced on October 5 that its Executive Committee had unanimously approved a tentative deal and recommended ratification. Eligible members now have the final say, with ballots due by 5 p.m. Pacific on October 29.
The proposal covers animated programming for network television, basic cable and streaming. It puts compensation and the future use of an actor’s voice into the same conversation, a useful reminder that the value of a performance can extend well beyond the day it is recorded.
Pay and the life of a performance
According to the union’s announcement, the four-year deal includes annual wage increases of 3 percent, with the first increase retroactive to July 5, 2026. It also raises the Health Plan contribution rate by one percentage point retroactive to September 6. Other provisions would improve certain streaming residuals and establish a high-budget category for animation made for free-to-consumer streaming services.
For a working performer, those provisions deserve separate attention. The session rate is the immediate part of a booking. Residuals concern later uses of the work, while benefit contributions have their own rules. A useful review asks which provisions apply to the specific production and when they take effect, rather than treating a headline percentage as a universal change to every paycheck.
More detail around digital replicas
The union’s published summary explains several proposed AI protections. A digital replica created from a production recording, without a separate scan or further participation by the actor, would still fall within the employment-based replica protections. For independently created replicas, the proposal establishes the minimum session fee as a payment floor and requires residuals where the resulting performance would qualify a human voice actor for them.
The summary also addresses replica security. Producers would have to restrict access to people with a legitimate business need and make commercially reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access, use or copying. These are specific contractual provisions, with scope and effective dates that should be read in the full union materials.
For actors and their representatives, the practical questions are clear. What recording is being made? Does the engagement contemplate a digital replica? Which later uses are being requested, and how would they be paid? Raising those questions while reviewing an offer gives the performer a clearer understanding of what is being licensed and which questions need the union’s or counsel’s attention.
The next step is member review
SAG-AFTRA has scheduled an online informational meeting for October 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. Pacific, for paid-up members in good standing. The advance-registration deadline is noon Pacific on October 9. The union says a recording will be posted for members who cannot attend. Its referendum page is the place to check the materials and any updates before voting.
As of this article’s October 8 reporting cutoff, the agreement remained subject to ratification. The immediate opportunity is to understand the proposal in enough detail to evaluate its effect on a working career. Keeping the offer, recording dates and usage terms together gives an actor and representative a concrete starting point for that conversation.
